One family decided to embark on a major home renovation project that would take them 18 months to finish. They knew it was ambitious, but they wanted a special family project they could be proud of. The project was to fit their bare living room and kitchen floors with wooden flooring from pallets.
First, they started collecting hardwood pallets. They were lucky to find a supplier who gave them all the wood for free. These discarded pieces were initially used to transport coconut oil into the US.
Nobody usually bothers with this kind of wood because it’s cheap and low-quality. Most people wouldn’t even use them for kindling, let alone make a table or cabinet out of them. Oddly enough, that is also what appeals to some people who can think of all sorts of uses for them. They can be like Legos for adults because they can be turned into anything with minimal skill or effort.
Next up was pulling the pallets apart and removing all the nails embedded in every single pallet, one by one. Everyone pitched in, including their young son. With the help of a sawzall, they removed a total of 9,000 nails.
The next process involved heading out to a local woodshop to have the pallets trimmed, sanded, and finished. The boards were cut down to half an inch thick and five inches wide. This was a long process so they got a family friend to help them out.
With the hardest tasks over and the pallets trimmed and sanded, all that was left was to assemble the pieces and refinish the wood.
Again, assembly took a considerable amount of time. But for the family, it was like a group effort to finish a massive jigsaw puzzle. They attached the pieces onto the living room and kitchen floors.
Their little guy and the family dog contributed as welcome distractions from the tedious work. And when every piece was finally in place, all it needed was a little buff and polish to make it shine.
Nobody expected a stunning result such as this. Who knew wood pallets could transform into something as exquisite as expensive hardwood floors?
From humble beginnings to an awesome finish. This family will cherish this home they worked on together for years to come.
